This hand built bowl is made with buff clay using both drape mold and coil techniques. It is then hand brushed with blue slip and hand carved with a unique sgrafitto design.

The process: a slab of clay is rolled out and draped across the surface of a mold, then pressed into shape. Coils are then applied on top to give the bowl additional height. A foot is hand-cut and attached to the bowl’s bottom. When the clay is bone dry, the inside of the bowl is painted with a blue slip, then a floral design is hand carved into the clay using the sgraffito technique. After the bowl is fired, clear glaze is poured into the bowl, over top the sgraffito, giving it a shiny finish. Finally, the outside of the bowl is dipped in an opal glaze before being fired for the final time.

Bowl is irregular/organic in shape. Measurements on handmade bowls are approximate in dimensions as they are irregular and unique. Due to the nature of handmade, I can’t be exact. Uniqueness of each piece is appreciated.
